What’s growing in your pasture?

Here in the Arizona desert, hay season has been in full swing for quite some time now. But many hay-growing areas in the U.S. have just seen the first cutting.

Now, aside from our alfalfa farming operation, we also planted a small oat pasture this year we just kicked some cows out on last weekend. We usually grow some sudan grass in the summer to feed cattle throughout the fall, winter and next spring, which has yielded some good protein levels for us.

This summer, we’re also wanting to plant some Teff grass. It’s pretty popular out here, we’ve just never grown it. It’s supposed to score well in nutritional value, so we’re giving it a shot this year.

Thinking about some of the new things we’re trying this year made me curious about forage crops producers in other locations are utilizing.

Do you use planted pasture? If so, what type of forage or blend do you typically plant?

Are your pastures strictly for grazing, or do you bale hay from them? Do they only produce feed for your cattle, or do you sell some of your forage crop as well?

Share a little about what’s growing in your pasture…
